The main ingredient, Turmeric contains over 300 natural compounds and curcumin is just one of these. Oxidative damage is believed to be one of the reasons behind many diseases, but curcumin's potent anti-oxidant boosts the activity of our body's own anti-oxidant enzymes and stimulates it's anti-oxidant defenses. These can then neutralise free radicals which cause significant damage to living cells and tissues. Turmeric has been used for centuries as a powerful anti-inflammatory and aids maintenance of a healthy inflammatory balance thus helping to ward off heart disease, metabolic syndrome, depression, Alzheimer's and various degenerative conditions. Tamarind, the other major ingredient in Kunyit Asam, is a rich source of dietary fibre, which binds to toxins, bile salts and excessive cholesterol, flushing them out of the body safely and cleanly. It aids in the lowering of cholesterol and supports liver functions. It's also an anti-inflammatory and is rich in vitamin A, B and C and iron, all of which get sorely depleted when we've been living it up a bit much! I also add ginger to this Jamu, which helps relieve oestoarthritis and muscle aches and pains.
Kunyit Asam can be drunk daily to warm the body and improve stamina. If you're feeling especially low (or brave) - add a raw egg to Kunyit Asam for extra invigoration. It is especially beneficially for those who are doing a lot of gym work or physical labour,
Other ingredients are: cinnamon, raw honey, lemongrass, black peppercorns and a splash of orange juice.
Kunyit Asam can be drunk warm or cold.

I've been visiting Indonesia for nearly 40 years and I remember when places like Ubud in Bali only had a few visitors a year! One night, after a memorable evening of drinking a tad too much Arak, my friend and I were able to skip, unimpeded by traffic, tourists or monkeys, down the middle of Monkey Forest Rd singing Patsy Cline's classic, "Walking After Midnight" :)
I've loved Indonesia and it's people for that many years. In 2005 I switched from teaching High School English to teaching bahasa Indonesia in Australian Primary Schools. I still make yearly visits to places all over Indonesia. And while I don't drink Arak any more, I do love to share everything else I learn about from this wonderful archipelago. Including, the planest's healthest beverage - Jamu!
In August 2018, I took a course with Ningsih (her name means "with love") at the Jamu Spa School in Nusa Dua. Ningsih's family have been making Jamu for five generations. As well as Kunyit Asam and Wedang Jahe, Ningsih taught me to make two other traditional Jamu: Beras Kencur (heavenly!) and Kunci Sirih. The problem now will be finding time to make them all .... and of course it's almost impossible to get kencur and kunci in Australia ... at the moment. But, some enterprising Aussie will do it one day soon. I believe. Please let me know if you do - or know of someone who does. :) In the meantime
Selamat Minuman Jamu!
Enjoy drinking Jamu
Compared to the robust consistency of Kunyit Asam Jamu, Wedang Jahe is akin to drinking a soothing green tea. The main ingredient, ginger, contains gingerol a substance with powerful medicinal properties. It's loaded with nutrients and bioactive compounds that have therapeutic benefits for your body and brain. Ginger's known to improves blood circulation; is a powerful anti-inflammatory; aids digestion and treats dyspepsia and helps prevent colds. In a 2015 study of participants with type 2 diabetes, 2 grams of ginger per day lowered fasting blood sugar by 12%.* The other main ingredients lemongrass and lemon leaves are excellent for relieving anxiety, boosting red blood cell levels, lowering blood pressure and boosting oral health. Other ingredients in Wedang Jahe are: cardamon, cloves, cinnamon, raw honey and black pepper. Wedang Jahe can be drunk warm or cold.
